Steve Holcomb never felt so appreciated. Tears came to his eyes as the respected local veteran received a new king-sized bed from Ashley HomeStore as part of the Touchdowns for Tempur-Pedic program.
Ashley HomeStore has partnered with a local organization, Tucson Veterans Serving Veterans to make this initiative possible. Established in 2003, the voluntary association has been striving to meet the needs of all veterans in Tucson and Southern Arizona through financial, medical, housing, and moral support. Along with other community partners, TVSV is the essential element in the drive to ending veteran homelessness in Tucson.
For every touchdown at a Wildcats home game this season, the locally owned Ashley HomeStore gives a free bed to a local veteran. So far, Ashley has given 13 free beds to veterans in need.
Veterans are chosen by Veterans Serving Veterans, a Tucson nonprofit, to receive new beds from Ashley HomeStore. Holcomb’s wife, Becky, nominated him. His new bed was the result of a 66-yard punt return touchdown at Arizona Stadium, helped by 43,620 cheering Wildcats fans in the first touchdown of the year.
Holcomb was overjoyed when he received his new bed. He and his wife had been sleeping on an old mattress for 16 years and he was looking forward to a better night’s sleep.
As a Vietnam veteran who served in the Navy, he felt shunned by society for a long time.
“It was a different time,” he said. “You couldn’t wear your uniform, or you would be spit on.”
Receiving the new bed as part of Ashley HomeStore’s program was the first time in his life that he felt truly appreciated, he said. It was wonderful, he added.
“We are so thankful to be part of Touchdowns for Tempur-Pedic,” his wife said. Ashley HomeStore’s project gives back to Tucson veterans who gave so much for their country. Ashley has donated more than 70 beds this year to various charities and organizations and hopes to donate many more throughout the Fall season.
