balding.jpgHave you been losing your hair and don’t know what to do? Physician’s Hair Institute has heard all your questions before and are here to help. Here are some of their most asked questions:

Why am I losing my hair?

There are many possible causes of hair loss, but the most common one is your genetics. Sometimes stress can be a contributing factor, but permanent hair loss occurs (especially in men) because of your body’s genetic response to a byproduct of testosterone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Male pattern baldness, also known as androgenetic alopecia, is the product of several genes (polygenic) which can be passed to you by either or both parents. Hence many of your male family members may experience a similar hair loss pattern.

How do I know if surgery is right for me?

If you are reasonably healthy, have androgenetic alopecia, or hair loss caused by trauma, scarring (face lifts or other scalp surgery) or traction, and have sufficient permanent donor hair to fill in areas of hair loss, you may be a candidate for surgery.

Women more commonly experience diffuse thinning, and sometimes this is caused by medically treatable causes. However, if donor areas are affected by thinning, they are not a reliable source of hair for redistribution and surgery would not be the right option. If you are uncertain whether you would be a good candidate, you should call to schedule an appointment. This may be purely for diagnosing a potentially treatable cause, or an evaluation for surgery. Together with Dr. Keene’s expertise, you can determine if hair transplantation surgery, or some other form of therapy, may be the correct treatment for your specific hair loss.

If I had Hair Transplant Surgery, how soon before I see results?

This is not an “immediate results” procedure. Your hair has natural stages of growth so this process is affected by the normal growth stages. First of all, you may find the newly transplanted hair will fall out due to shock and trauma from the procedure. This leaves the root behind and the beginning of your new growth should be visible about 3 months after surgery. Your hair will then continue to gradually sprout, and then to mature and add density for approximately a year. So, it’s a long term process, but the results are definitely worth the wait!

Can I talk to any of your previous patients?

Yes! After your free consultation, Dr. Keene would be happy to set up a meeting with one of her previous customers if you are seriously considering Hair Transplant Surgery.

How much does it cost?

Just as the degree of hair loss differs from person to person, the cost to restore natural appearing coverage is variable. This will depend on the individual number of grafts needed to cover the area of hair loss, your hair characteristics and goals for coverage. Price per graft ranges from $3.00 to $7 per graft depending on the session size, and your choice of donor removal technique (FUE or FUT). More grafts usually result in reduced price per graft. Your specific transplant needs and cost will be addressed during your consultation with Dr. Keene.

Hopefully some of your questions have been answered, but if you would like to know more, please call Physician’s Hair Institute today and they will be happy to schedule your consultation or diagnosis appointment to answer any remaining questions you may have! The office number is 520-290-5555.

About Physician's Hair Institute

Dr. Keene’s clinic, Physician’s Hair Institute, in Tucson, AZ, utilizes state of the art equipment and techniques in hair transplant surgery. For the FUT graft dissection, this includes a form of magnification that offers improvements over the standard stereoscopic microscope used by most hair restoration surgery practices in graft dissection. It involves a high-resolution digital video camera, in conjunction with a backlight, projected onto an LCD screen. Dr. Keene announced this technique at the Orlando, Florida conference in 2002, and presented the technique in 2003 at the Italian Society of Hair Restoration Surgery conference in Rome, Italy. The technique was well received and has been adapted by many of the top hair restoration clinics. It is an improvement over the stereoscopic microscope in that it allows the doctor more direct supervision, while improving ergonomics for the technicians, and provides excellent magnification for dissection.
