Pillow top, foam, coils … firm, medium, super soft — with so many things to think about when choosing a mattress, it’s hard to know where to even start. The first thing to consider: your sleep style.

Here’s what to look for from your next mattress based on your preferred sleep position.

Side Sleepers

Because side sleepers often shift during the night from both legs straight out, to one leg bent and both bent, they need a softer mattress. That’s not to say that there shouldn’t be any support. On the contrary, side sleepers should get a soft-to-medium firm mattress with support to alleviate pressure points in their neck and back. If you go too firm, though, this can create pain points down the road — or even immediately when you wake up. Opt for a cushy memory foam mattress or a coil spring one that has a soft pillow top.

Back Sleepers

Unlike side sleepers, back sleepers largely remain in the same position during the night. Because of this, they require more support.

A mattress that’s too soft can throw the sleeper’s spinal alignment off, whereas an overly firm bed will aggravate pressure points. The ideal option for a back sleeper is a mattress that is slightly soft but has ample back support. You’ll want to try a number of different mattress types out to see what feels best for your specific needs.

Stomach Sleepers

Support should be the main priority for stomach sleepers. In fact, of all the sleep positions, stomach sleepers need the firmest mattress.

In this position, the stomach places the greatest pressure on the mattress. So, if the mattress is too soft, it will sag at the torso and make the spine curve, which can lead to back pain or worse. Stomach sleepers should aim to be as flat on the mattress as possible, so even an overly fluffy pillow is out of the question.

It doesn’t matter if you’re a side sleeper, a back sleeper or a stomach sleeper, the professionals at Ashley HomeStore of Tucson and Green Valley will make sure you’re resting comfortably in the perfect mattress for you.
