The kitchen is the heart of your home. It’s where you gather to break bread and to celebrate. It’s also a room that takes a ton of wear and tear.

When homeowners consider updating their kitchen, they often experience sticker shock. According to the Remodeling 2015 Cost vs. Value Report, the national average for a mid-range, major kitchen remodel is more than $50,000. Factor in the headache of long weeks, if not months, of construction and suddenly you’re searching for a better way to spruce up that special room.

A host of lower-priced alternatives exist to renovate a kitchen. “You don’t have to break the bank to give the room a state-of-the-art, modern look,” says Melissa Elkins, senior designer and owner of Southwest Kitchen and Bath in Tucson, Ariz. “There are choices that deliver a big, remodeling punch for a much lower cost than complete reconstruction.”

The option that comes with the biggest cost savings? Refacing rather than replacing your cabinets. Here are a few of the advantages:

  1. An updated look for thousands less

It costs about half as much to reface, rather than replace, your cabinets. Why install a whole new container when the only portion that needs modernizing is the part you see?

Refacing includes removing all doors and drawer fronts and prepping the frame of the cabinet for a wood-on-wood veneer treatment. The exposed sides of the cabinets receive wood panels and the existing trim details are replaced with new trim. New solid wood drawer fronts and wood doors are then installed in place of old doors. Old hinges are replaced with upgraded hidden hinges. Drawer boxes and glides can also be changed.

  1. Less time spent on construction

Compared to weeks or months of demolition, an average size kitchen refacing project can be completed in less than a week. Mess is usually minimal, so you can continue to use your kitchen during installation.

  1. A variety of design types to choose from

If you’re planning on introducing a new color scheme in the kitchen, refacing offers several colors, grain patterns and other design choices. Even glass doors can be incorporated. Many homeowners like this trend since it gives them a chance to showcase a special tableware collection. Added options include high-end details, such as crown molding, slide-out drawers or rollout trash cans.
